The Future of Money podcast hosted Johnny Dilley, the Venture Associate for Pantera Capital, to discuss where Bitcoin is today and where it might go in the future. Over 45 minutes, Johnny introduces several concepts of the digital currency technology, including the following (with times as a short cut to the good parts):

  • @7:10 - A discussion of "major trajectories" changing banking today and into the future.
    • A distrust of existing institutions.
    • The emerging world is aware of the fees large institutions charge to make transactions.
    • How digital currency saves time against the large institutions.

  • 11:30 - Uses of bitcoin around the world.
    • Bitcoin is being used as a speculative asset in the developed world, where we have easy access to banking institutions and the fees are not high enough to impact our overall wealth.
    • In the developing world, where inflation is very high, transferring your savings into bitcoin and back to local currencies when needed protects your income from inflationary loss.
    • The transaction format of Bitcoin protects against the higher fees. As an example, Dilley explains the Bitcoin fee is 2% vs Western Union's 6-10% and newer companies charging 3-4%.
    • There is also an arbitrage opportunity, where companies will offer more bitcoin when transferring money back to developing countries. The reason is the transferring company gets access to the original currency (US or Canadian dollars and Euros as examples).
    • As a "payment rail" in any communication platform, providing the ability to "broadcast money" in realtime.

  • @31:50 - The foreseeable benefits of Bitcoin and what how it could impact our lives 10-15 years out.
    • Banking industry - Bitcoin technology provides greater efficiency, greater speed and better security.
    • Information security - How information is sent, saved and interpreted change with the block chain. The Bitcoin wallet gives control of their identify back to the user.
    • The Internet of Things gains the ability to make payments without human validation.

  • @45:20 - How the bitcoin blockchain could provide secure and easy voting.

These are just a few of the details presented. If you are trying to understand Bitcoin, the podcast offers a lot of information in 45 minutes.
