Black Mirror screen captureBlack Mirror is a brilliant 6-episode series, each depicting the social impact of new technologies or social advancement in the future. Showing on Britain's Channel 4, it can be a bit hard to watch in the States, but is worth every effort to see.

Future ideas and social impacts
When I think of sci-fi, this is exactly what I want. Six different stories with six different twists to consider. Charlie Booker, the creator of the series and writer of most of the episodes, did a brilliant job of coming up with such unique scenes and letting them unfold from the viewpoint of the characters.

Series 1

The National Anthem
Looks at the ability of terrorists to use social media to blackmail someone into a grotesque public display - live on the Internet. The kidnapping of a royal family member sets the leverage to force the Prime Minister into a very uncomfortable position with a pig.

Fifteen Million Merits
Screen shot from Fifteen Million MeritsSet in a world built around shows such as American Idol and Britain's Got Talent, this episode follows a pair in love as they live, eat and breath media in order to get a shot on stage. What happens after is shocking as both characters are faced with very different futures then they expected.

The Entire History of You
Screen shot from The Entire History of YouThis episode revolves around a new technology that records you living moments from your perspective. A "DVR of your life" if you will, the owners can go back in time and playback moments to explore or, in some cases, get off with. Three characters interact through some bizarre social situations created by having access to old memories.

Series 2

Be Right Back
This episode is similar to the Zoe Greystone/Tamara Adama avatars in Caprica. The main character's husband is the focus when she chooses to use a new technology to bring her husband back from the dead. Interesing perspective on the value and completeness of our lives on social media.

White Bear
Scene from White BearA woman wakes up in a room and has no idea who or where she is. Finding herself hunted by psychos, she goes on the run for her life. The episode looks at a future where memories can be wiped and how such an advancement might be used for good/evil. You have to watch the episode to decide which.

The Waldo Moment
Vote for Waldo screen shotA late-night comic cartoon posing as a children's animation makes a run for office with an outcome you didn't see coming. My least favorite of the six, but the idea cast a mirror on humanity and our love for things that aren't human.

Review
The best television I've watched in years, Black Mirror is a work of art. Anyone interested in the future and the unintentional impact of our advancements, should watch this show. In the US, the series is only available as DVD's through Amazon. I guarantee they will be money well spent.
