Maker Cities - a shared solution community from Institute for the Future
The Institute for the Future has launched a new game in which people can add ideas about what their city might look like in the future. Using an online map, members can add their ideas which are then available to other members. There is a four step process to getting ideas into the "make" phase:
- Imagine+ add - Imagine an idea for your city in 2025 and add your future (idea) to the map.
- Support - Other players support your future and you support others’ futures. After 2 supports, a future moves to the refine stage.
- Refine - Other players refine your future and you refine others’; after 6 refinement suggestions, a future moves to the make stage.
- Make - Now anyone can make a prototype (drawing, photo, video) and upload it to the game to help bring any future to life!
It's an exciting opportunity enabling people and ideas from all over the world to interact and build towards some excellent advancements. In my own backyard of Richmond, Virginia, user j2hagan submitted this idea:
VA MOBILE READY APP ADDS CITIZEN RESPONSE RESCUE MAPPING MAKER WORLD
Local code hackers propose to Governor Bob McDonnell to build-in a feature for a crowdsourced map of citizen volunteers into the current Mobile Ready Map modeled on San Rafael California's Fires department map.
Another interesting idea, from my old home of Toronto, Canada, from BriannaSmrke is a modular public transport system. The international (to me) city I've spent the most time in, Bucharest, Romania, offers two very interesting ideas: A transparent city where all state institution data is available; neighborhoods where the collective mood is tracked and an event to raise the mood is scheduled when things are down.
A few others to watch:
TEAHOUSEUNIVERSITY PORTLAND - Submitted by FilipBeijing
We all have different skills but lack real life platforms to meet and share, channels of communication to connect the dots while we have many online platforms to share lessons learnt and offer/seek micro-services based on unique knowledge.

BEIJING - Submitted by FilipBeijing
We all have many skills but lack real life space to share knowledge and communication channels to connect the dots and link the people. Yet we have enough social media platforms to share and offer/seek knowledge and micro-services. Let's hack our knowledge, host sessions online and offline where we can learn and teach for free.
DIGITAL LEARNING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR CHILDREN'S MAKER WORLD - Submitted by Diego Parra
We ofter see in our street child's and young's working, sometimes selling and other performing an act for some coins. We would lie to see them studying but their families are so poor that every member of the family must make heir own living. First Digital learning would allow these child's to study during the nights, and will help them to eventually develop a business that generate revenues for them and their families, allowing them to enjoy their childhood and secure a better future. It is a difficult subject, with sensitive issues, but doing something is better that delivering a coin or simply ignoring them. The government is not good enough, I am afraid, to deliver solutions. Lets do it our selfs.
Launched in January 2014, the site already hosts over 160 different ideas for a better future. Worth keeping track of to see which prove popular enough to see made.
